Scheduling

One of the greatest advantages of homeschooling is YOU, the parent, set the schedule. While this ability to actually establish the hours your children will learn brings big responsibility, it also allows the parent to incorporate many learning opportunities into the school schedule that most children do not receive.

Our family has found that the children learn the same amount of material they did in public school in a shorter time period. I think this is true of most

homeschools. In the public school setting, the class must move along a the same rate. Also, in the homeschool there are far fewer children per teacher. So, each child gets much more attention. If there is a question, or a problem, the child can get immediate help and reinforcement.

Our own homeschool might have this hourly schedule on a given day:

8:30 - 9:15 Math

9:15 - 10:00 Reading

10:00 - 10:15 Recess

10:15 - 11:00 Geography

11:00 - 11:45 Bible Study

11:45 - 12:45 Lunch

12:34 - 1:30 Art

Afternoon - Outing

Our Monday, Wednesday & Friday schedule is basically the same and the Tuesday & Thursday schedule includes other subjects, such as Science, History, Music or Health. We also have Physical Education with many fun outings such as a trip to the YMCA to swim, golf, biking, etc. Plenty of attention is given other areas such as Cooking Class, Auto Mechanics and even Political Science. Our girl and our boys all learn together, with materials at the appropriate age level for each, but many of the subjects, such as cooking, can be taught to all three of our children in a group.

The truth of the matter is our own children get a much broader, well-rounded education than they ever could get in either the public or private school setting. When a subject is giving one of them trouble, we can adjust and spend more time where needed. As they progress quickly on a subject they grasp easily, they can move ahead. Our 7th grader is now doing 8th grade math. This flexibility doesn’t exist in the public school system.

Our family & friends are happy to lend our financial support to the Starcross Community, an organization which provides love & care, in a home setting, to children afflicted with AIDS.
