Getting started homeschooling your children is much easier than you might think. Prior to the school year, the parent must submit completed and notarized forms to the Nebraska Department of Education which indicate your intention to homeschool due to either religious reasons (Chapter 13) or other reasons (Chapter 12). The forms are readily available on the NE Department of Education website and there is a link on our website to this area.

These few pages of forms are easy to complete, but you must establish a curriculum, showing either one of the accepted commercial curriculums available, or the books you will be using, the total hours you will teach, and establish a calendar school year. None of this is time consuming or hard to accomplish. The parents must also detail their education, but it important to note that you do not need to be a professional teacher, or have a background in education to homeschool your children.

Once you submit the forms to the Department of Education, and are approved, they notify the public school your child would normally attend that you will be homeschooling during that school year. You must complete and submit new forms each school year by the due date. The very first year the forms are submitted, certified birth certificates for each child must accompany the forms. They are returned, and need not be submitted in subsequent years.

There are no Department of Education tests for your child to take, nor are there mandatory visits from the Department of Education to check on your progress. You, as parents, are responsible for your child’s education. While this sounds like an awesome responsibility, and it is, it is also a tremendous opportunity!
